Maximus, a Roman commander, is betrayed by Commodus, the son of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. Banished into slavery, Maximus must fight for his survival in the brutal Gladiator battles if he is to rise up and seek his vengeance against Commodus.

In an Oscar-winning role, Russell Crowe portrays Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general whose family is murdered by a corrupt prince Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Sold into slavery, Maximus is forced to fight in gladiatorial combat, thus enabling him to embark on his bloodthirsty quest revenge — eventually leading him to face Commodus in front of thousands in the Coliseum.
