This documentary lays bare the story of María Luisa Bemberg, an Argentine director and screenwriter who broke free from her conservative upbringing to embark on a career in cinema. As her ideals floundered under male directors, Bemberg opted to take control of her stories — resulting in six films that pushed back against sexist ideologies and opened the door to the next feminist revolution.
María Luisa Bemberg: The Echo of My Voice
This documentary chronicles the story of Argentine director and screenwriter María Luisa Bemberg. Born in the 1920s to one of Argentina’s most powerful families, Bemberg’s upbringing did everything possible to make her a beautiful, devoted and, above all, subservient wife. Bemberg did just the opposite as soon as she could, undertaking a fight that would become her life’s work; her first scripts would be filmed by men incapable of understanding her ideas. With nothing but courage and no formal training, Bemberg began directing her stories in the 1960s, culminating in six feature-length films and invitations to movie festivals, numerous awards, and an Oscar nomination. Before her death in 1995, Bemberg insisted that the 21st century would belong to women and that another feminist revolution was to come — a revolution that Bemberg undeniably laid the groundwork for.
