The film tells of the story of the founder of Chin Woo Athletic Association and the icon of Chinese kungfu, Huo Yuanjia. Huo Yuanjia overcomes the darkness of his arrogant youth and returns to defeat several foreign fighters while reuniting Chinese people and restoring their pride.

Despite his amazing kungfu talent, Young Huo Yuanjia is utterly arrogant which eventually costs him the lives of his mother and daughter. Crazed with grief and shame, Huo Yuanjia leaves Tianjin and settled down in a remote village.
When the foreigners invade Qing dynasty and mockingly call China the Sick man of the East, Huo Yuanjia returns to Tianjin. He uses his graceful kungfu to defeat a British boxer, a Belgian lancer, a Spanish fencer, and the most fearsome American wrestler, Hercules O'Brien. He founds Chin Woo Athletic Association, hoping to use kungfu to reunite Chinese people and restore their pride.
