Kazuma forms a party of three: Aqua, a trouble-making goddess; Megumin, a stubborn magician; and Darkness, a wildly delusional knight. They are all highly capable, but each brings their own set of baggage. During his journey, Kazuma is burdened with debt, tried on suspicion of treason, compelled to take on generals of the Demon King Army, and occasionally killed.

It appears the birthplace of Megumin and Yunyun, the Crimson Demon Village, is on the verge of destruction. Kazuma and the party follow Yunyun, who left to go save the village.
