Winston "Slug" Winters (Jack Haley) must prove he can rise to the challenge of going from high school coach to taking on Texas State University’s football team. An unforeseen situation sends him scrambling when a clerical error results in Yale University offering a challenge game to TSU instead of the University of Texas team. The head of TSU would love to prove to the entire world that this small college can rise to the challenge. Then TSU looses their star player, and Slug and his affable wife, Bessie (Patsy Kelly), must somehow work a miracle and whip their college football team into shape. They discover a melon-tossing hillbilly farmhand who never finished high school. Slug and Bessie must get the young man and his sister accredited for college so that the barefoot fullback can use his 90-yard passes to bring TSU to glory. This musical filled with singing and dancing includes Judy Garland making her feature film debut and boasts the singing group, The Yacht Club Boys and film and Broadway dancer Dixie Dunbar.
