Do you think that someone like Banana Joe could allow an unsavory person and his thugs to set up a banana processing plant and a casino and subjugate the small village of Amantido? Brawny and illiterate Joe has to fight bureaucracy, military conscription and is even sentenced to prison, but he finally manages to save the village and the local people. An environmental comedy starring Bud Spencer.

Banana Joe

“We harvest bananas!” In Amantido, a tropical island in South America, brawny Banana Joe trades bananas while a local gangster named Torsillo and his thugs with an eye on his property try to take it over. Banana Joe, who supplies the people of his nearby communities with bananas, won’t let Torsillo take his commerce, set up a casino and subjugate Amantido. But he needs a permit in order to operate his boat, so he goes to the big city for the first time to comply with this seemingly simple formality. But Joe is a simple and illiterate man who ignores the rules of modern society, who doesn’t have a surname, an identity certificate, a working permit nor a selling licence. The movie has many comic moments: in pursuit of his special banana selling permit, Joe has to get his birth certificate at the archbishopric first and then to counter 2 of the Registration Office to get his ID Card, and then again to counter 16 of the same office. Only to discover, at the end, that all he needs is to join the army. Before completing military service, Joe abandons the army and is sentenced to prison for a number of charges: desertion, spreading dissension, insulting an officer, breaking and entering, and resisting arrest. The turning point takes place in prison where Joe meets a con man from Naples named Manuel, whose persuasion skills and connections help Joe to get the longed-for trading permit. Joe’s luck finally changes for the better: he escapes from prison and returns to Amantido with Manuel in time to dismantle a gambling casino, and when the police arrive, he is granted amnesty by the President and local gangster Torsillo gets arrested.
