Lessons in Chocolate
Mattia, an ambitious and unscrupulous contractor, lives and works according to one unique motto: “quality at the lowest possible cost." He cheats endlessly in both business and love, holding extremely superficial attitudes about everything. But then, an accident on a construction site involving his off-the-books worker Kamal, obliges him to agree to an unlikely proposition and to radically reorder his beliefs. From that point on, Mattia also becomes Kamal and enrolls in a course for aspiring chocolatiers – without, however, dropping his construction jobs. During the chocolate-making course, offered by a major confectioner, he tries his hand at making chocolate along with six other amateur but already experienced gourmets. Under the tutelage of a Master in the Art of Chocolate, they learn everything there is to know about creating chocolate. There’s the arrogant Sicilian, Corrado; the gruff Venetian, Milo; the pushy spinster, Letizia; and the volcanic Luigi. For the rank beginner Mattia, who foments one disaster after another, it’s a nightmare, but also an arc of discovery to an unexpected side of himself. Then there’s Cecilia, the alluring and somewhat quirky head of the class, who will reveal to Mattia secrets about both chocolate and himself. Caught between recipes and cost estimates, tempering chocolate and fudging bills, Mattia will let himself be seduced by chocolate…and by love.
