What are te reo Māori movies?
Te reo Māori movies are film adaptations in the Indigenous language of Aotearoa, New Zealand. Rather than simply translating the dialogue, each film is carefully adapted by Māori language experts, creatives, and performers to capture the humour and culture of te reo Māori.
As translator Tweedie Waititi explains of Coco Reo Māori, "Lookout for all the Ngāti 'saysay' (idioms)."
Why watch movies in te reo Māori?
Watching beloved Disney stories in te reo Māori offers a fresh way to share the language and heritage with younger generations through the power of animation, music, and storytelling. Whether you’re fluent or still learning, there’s something special about hearing these familiar characters speak the language of Aotearoa.
