Every great family comedy needs a few strong personalities, and the adults of Modern Family deliver in spades.

Jay Pritchett played by Ed O'Neill

Jay sits atop the Pritchett-Dunphy clan as the no-nonsense patriarch, married to Gloria and father to Claire, Mitchell, and Joe, plus stepfather to Manny. Gruff, blunt, but ultimately a softie (he’ll never admit it), he’s everyone’s favourite grandpa, even with his old-man puns and one-liners.

Gloria Pritchett played by Sofía Vergara

Nobody commands a room quite like Gloria, Jay’s second wife and mother to Manny and Joe. Originally from Colombia, Gloria is passionate and will absolutely let you know if you’ve crossed a line…especially if you’ve messed with her family.

Claire Dunphy played by Julie Bowen

Claire runs her household like a small business, a skill set that later makes her a natural fit to take over as CEO of Pritchett’s Closets & Blinds, taking the reins from her father, Jay. Wife to Phil and mother to Hayley, Alex, and Luke, Claire is known to be high-strung and constitutionally incapable of losing…which has led to some very memorable moments across the series.

Philip "Phil" Dunphy played by Ty Burrell

Forget the emergency contact, Phil is the emergency. 

He’s Claire’s husband and father to Hayley, Alex, and Luke. Real estate agent, part-time magician, full-time dispenser of Phil's-osophy, he’s got the heart of a big kid and a zest for life…no matter how many broken steps stand in his way.

Mitchell Pritchett played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson

Mitchell keeps things measured and reserved, at least compared to the rest of the family. Jay’s son, Claire's brother, Cameron's husband, and dad to Lily, he's a conflict-averse lawyer whose perfectionist nature is the perfect (if occasionally combustible) counterbalance to his husband's boisterous personality.

Cameron Tucker played by Eric Stonestreet

Subtlety isn’t really Cameron's thing. But that's exactly why we love him. Mitchell's husband and father to Lily, Cameron is a classically-trained Auguste clown named Fizbo, former centre for the Fighting Illini American football team, and current coach who never met a moment he couldn't make bigger.

For one of the show's Emmy® Award-winning episodes, stream "Caught in the Act" (Season 2, Episode 13). What starts as an innocent anniversary morning in the Dunphy house spirals into full family chaos. 

It wouldn’t be a Modern Family watch guide without a nod to Claire Dunphy’s favourite holiday, Halloween. Start with “Halloween” (Season 2, Episode 6), where Claire's perfectly constructed haunted house gets derailed by Cameron's childhood trauma, Mitchell's costume mishap, and Gloria's growing frustration with Jay, all building to Claire's favourite sound: Children screaming in fear.  

“Connection Lost” Season 6, Episode 16) unfolds entirely through Claire’s computer screen. Stuck at O’Hare Airport, Claire spirals, hacks into Haley’s iCloud, stalks her on Facebook, and convinces herself that her daughter has secretly eloped and is pregnant. The truth turns out to be much less dramatic, but the chase makes it one of the most unforgettable episodes of Modern Family.
