After World War II, Ip Man arrives at Hong Kong and opens his Wing Chun school. Ip Man shortly takes in Wong Leung and his friends as his first apprentices. After some conflicts, Ip Man also befriends the Hung Ga master, Hung Chun-nam. When Hung dies defending the Chinese culture and people, Ip Man engages in a challenge to avenge his death.

After Ip Man defeats General Miura, he is shot and wounded by Colonel Sato (Tenma Shibuya). His friend Chow Ching-chuen (Simon Yam) helps him escape Foshan. Ip Man arrives in Hong Kong and opens his Wing Chun school. A young man named Wong Leung (Huang Xiaoming), who’s been learning Western boxing, comes with some friends to challenge Ip Man and ultimately becomes his apprentices.
One day Wong Leung starts a fight with the apprentices of the Hung Ga School and is captured by them. His rescue leads Ip Man to meet the Hung Ga master, Hung Chun-nam (Sammo Hung), who tells Ip Man about the requirements of opening a kung fu school in Hong Kong.
Afterwards, Hung Chun-nam tries to defend Chinese culture and people against the insult and racist behavior of the English boxing champion, Taylor “The Twister” Milos (Darren Shahlavi). Hindered by his asthma problem, Hung Chun-nam is beaten to death in the ring by Twister. To avenge Hung Chun-nam and to defend the reputation of Chinese kung fu, Ip Man challenges Taylor Milos to a fight.
