It’s hard to imagine that in a world-class city like Hong Kong, some prisoners are still being treated inhumanely today. At one particular juvenile detention center, which houses 14 to 25-year-olds who call it “hell on earth,” physical and mental abuse is considered a core treatment for inmates.
Fan, the protagonist in this prison drama, is a young gang member who’s been sentenced to three months at the juvenile detention center. After just three days inside, the abuse from the staff prompts Fan to attempt suicide. He survives, finding hope that he’ll be able to see his grandmother one last time before she dies. Determined to leave the detention center, Fan embraces his mistreatment and submits to the guards’ abuse, earning his right to be released in record time. But just days before he’s set to be released, Fan witnesses the mysterious death of his cellmate.
Is this the only way to ensure the rehabilitation of our young prisoners? How many more young lives will be ruined if we allow places like this to exist?
