Esperança
Esperança is a charismatic 80-year-old widow living in a very desirable apartment in central Lisbon with her cat Baltazar. Her surviving son Artur is married to Leonor, a nurse in Benfica, and together they have a son Rodrigo, Esperança’s only grandson. Esperança is the only remaining original resident in her four-story building in Castelo, whose landlord hopes to convert it all into tourist accommodation. Following an accidental clash with building administrator Sérgio, Esperança finds that she must now also contend with her son and his ambitious wife as they conspire to force her out of her home. Following the incident, 80-year-old landlord António approaches Esperança in an attempt to help her, and their encounters will reveal a story buried several decades ago that neither one is ready to re-live.
