Four young siblings and their mother, Rose, arrive at Marrowbone, an abandoned house. They fled England, leaving behind a violent father and a criminal past, hoping to start a new life in a place where no one knows them. They soon befriend Allie, a local girl who brings light into their sad lives. But Rose dies unexpectedly, leaving her children alone and without resources. The siblings decide to bury their mother in the garden and keep her death a secret so they cannot be separated or sent back to England. But as they try to survive without any adult supervision, hiding from the world and with nowhere else to go, a threatening presence begins to haunt the old house.
