When the people living on the western side of the Sonnenallee watch their eastern neighbors from observation platforms, they see them trying to live as normal a life as possible. Both the youth and the grown-ups try to rebel in their own respective ways.

When the people living on the western side of the Sonnenallee watch their eastern neighbors from observation platforms, they see them trying to live as normal a life as possible. The 17-year-old Michael Ehrenreich, nicknamed Micha, and his best friend Mario, live at the short end of the Sonnenallee, next to the checkpoint between West and East Berlin. They will soon graduate from school and try to rebel against the restrictions on social life in East Berlin, by listening to (mainly forbidden) rock and pop music, and by wearing Jinglers-Jeans. Additionally, they have their first experiences with the difficulties of growing up and falling in love, through trying to win the heart of their school’s beauty Miriam. Micha's uncle Heinz from West Berlin visits his family living in the eastern part often, and smuggles in a lot of useless things. Mother Ehrenreich secretly prepares for her flight with the passport someone from Western Germany that she found…
