Just before WWII, lovely Londoner Cluny Brown falls in love with a penniless Czech refugee while working as a parlormaid at a stuffy country manor.

Cluny Brown

Cluny Brown (Jennifer Jones) is a lovely, but somewhat impoverished, English lass, and the niece of a plumber in London. One day, when her uncle is unavailable to take a plumbing job at a posh society home, the plucky Cluny (who has a personal passion for plumbing) goes in his stead. While there, she meets Adam Belinski (Charles Boyer), an author who is a refugee from Czechoslovakia. The two bond instantly, recognizing each other as "displaced souls." Unfortunately, the charming Belinski is penniless and Cluny is looking to improve her social status. To that end, she gets herself a job as a maid on a country estate, where she is wooed by Mr. Wilson, a wealthy shopkeeper. He's dominated by his mother and he's a bit dull, but he is on the rung of the social ladder she'd like to achieve. That uninspired romance would have probably taken its course if it wasn't for the fact that Adam Belinski is a houseguest in the Wilson household. Delighted to be reunited with Cluny, he also sets about wooing her. Will Cluny choose love or security?
