On the verge of turning forty, Étienne, about to become the head of his company, seeks to ease his conscience over an injustice he committed at the start of his career, which, ironically, helped launch it. Urged by a childhood friend, he goes to see the man he wronged to make amends, but things take a dark turn when the man is killed by his friend. Étienne tries to carry on with his life, but it slowly descends into a nightmare, as he is harassed by his friend and pursued by a police investigation, finding that the more he struggles, the tighter the net closes around him. Reaching the end of his tether, Étienne realizes he has only one option left.
