Atrangi Re

On the 24th day of deluge in Bihar, Dulhayen had finally had it. Rinku, has been running away from home with her lover since she was 14, and 10 years later still, after being caught for the umpteenth time, she wouldn’t reveal his name. There was nothing to be done but to get her forced married — with just about any man they could find — as long as he wasn’t from Bihar. Coincidentally, a group of doctors had just arrived from Delhi, to volunteer at the Relief Camp and Rinku’s Mamas find one who would do. But under the blanket of a rainy night, his men kidnap Vishu. Vishu, a traditional Tamilian boy, was to be engaged to Mandy, in three days — but he never gets to voice this out as he’s gagged, carried home in a sack and given laughing gas, whilst performing wedding rituals with a sedated Rinku. With the consent of the tradition of a Pakadwa Vivaah, Rinku & Vishu are wed and sent off to Delhi. On the journey Rinku confesses about Sajjad to Vishu and Vishu informs her about his imminent engagement. Both decide to disavow the “marriage” and go on with their lives. However, on the day of his engagement, a “happiest groom ever” begins to circulate amongst his friends & family — it’s Rinku & Vishu’s wedding video. A livid Mandy asks Vishu to straighten his mess out and only then come back to her. This results in the start of a friendship between our two protagonists. Rinku is excited to for Vishu & Sajjad to meet. Vishu is equally looking forward to meet Sajjad. But as he watches Rinku introduce the two of them, he realises that Sajjad doesn’t exist. He’s a fragment of her imagination. Her ideal man, very real to her, but not real at all. Vishu is unable to ignore Rinku’s condition and decides to help her. This film talks about their journey and how Vishu soon finds himself competing with an idea of a man who is perfect. Atrangi Re is a bittersweet love story of a simple man, a headstrong woman, and a ‘bigger than life’ idea of love, laced with soulful music and entertaining circus acts.
