What is Hulu’s new show Phony about?

After Sonny is in a car crash, he wakes up in the hospital, glad to be alive. But relief soon turns into confusion and fear. He starts to suspect that the woman who has come to his bedside, claiming to be his mother and best friend, may be an imposter. Worse still, he seems to be the only one in his small town who thinks something is amiss with his mother, Ellen.

Ellen, meanwhile, is concerned for Sonny. After the accident, she tries her best to restore normalcy and help Sonny recover, but as his behavior becomes increasingly erratic, Ellen grows desperate.

As oddities and inconsistencies pile up, you’ll be pulled into Sonny’s quest for the truth, piecing together the puzzle alongside him. What unfolds is a mystery that blends humor with supernatural and sci-fi elements, keeping you inside Sonny’s uncertainty about what’s happened to his mother.

At its heart, Phony is a coming-of-age story about navigating teenage awkwardness, vulnerability, and seeing a parent in a new light. Luckily, Sonny’s friends support him throughout the twists and turns, grounding the chaos with humor and heart.
