All About FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga

Wanda and Leon’s stories continue as L.A. enters a new era. Get plot and streaming details about the 90s-set follow-up to FX’s Snowfall.

What is FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga about?

The show follows FX’s Snowfall characters Wanda Bell, played by Gail Bean, and Leon Simmons, played by Isaiah John, as they fight to reinvent themselves in 90s Los Angeles, where the fallout from the crack epidemic is fueling a new game: the rise of West Coast rap.

Wanda starts the show driven by the clear belief that West Coast rap has the power to reshape American culture. She sets out to put together a ragtag group of geniuses and lead them to the realization of all their dreams. To do it, she must navigate the dangerous overlap of music and street politics, pulling in those closest to her, including her cousins Lamar Kinsey, played by Asante Blackk, and James Kinsey, played by Peyton Alex Smith, and pursuing volatile local rapper Artillery, played by Simmie “Buddy” Sims III, who is already in a tangle with law enforcement.

Her internship with former D-boy-turned-label-owner Darryl “DG” Grant, played by Brandon Mychal Smith, creates opportunities but also deepens tensions between Wanda and Leon. Leon has vowed to leave the streets for good and chase down his own atonement through his free legal clinic.

As ambition, loyalty, and survival collide, how much is everyone willing to risk in order to build something lasting in a world that threatens to pull them down?

The show expands Wanda’s family, introducing new relatives, as well as some young aspiring hip-hop artists.

Lamar Kinsey played by Asante Blackk

Lamar is a “nerd in the hood,” a musical prodigy whose sensitivity makes him both gifted and vulnerable. Protected yet constrained by family, Lamar is pulled between safety and self-expression as his growing talent attracts danger.

Blackk previously played Malik Hodges on This Is Us (Hulu).

James Kinsey played by Peyton Alex Smith

James is Lamar’s older brother. A former gangbanger trying to live clean, he understands violence in a way Lamar never can.

Smith is known for playing Rafael Waithe on Legacies.

Artillery played by Simmie “Buddy” Sims III

Artillery is a raw, magnetic rapper whose artistry is intertwined with the violence surrounding him. He speaks the truth of the streets without polish or compromise, which makes him powerful and unpredictable.

Sims is a rapper, singer, dancer, and actor who’s collaborated with artists including Chance the Rapper and Kendrick Lamar.

Darryl “DG” Grant played by Brandon Mychal Smith

DG is a millionaire from the streets trying to transition from the drug game to the music business. He sees hip-hop as a new hustle and struggles to adapt as power shifts away from fear and toward creativity.

Smith played Sam Dresden on FX’s comedy-drama show You’re the Worst (Hulu).

Gerty Kinsey played by Nicki Micheaux

Gerty is the emotional backbone of the family: deeply loving, cautious, and shaped by past tragedy. She understands exactly how street life can affect families and refuses to gamble Lamar’s life on a dream.

Micheaux has appeared on shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Hulu) and Good Trouble (Hulu).

James “Big Daddy” Kinsey played by Mykelti Williamson

Big Daddy is the family’s protector and enforcer of order. He’s a man who believes survival requires control, and whose love for Lamar may ultimately be at odds with Lamar’s future.

Williamson played the iconic Bubba in Forrest Gump and Ellstin Limehouse on FX’s Justified (Hulu).
