In remembrance of the 30th anniversary of the tragedy, this special retraces the story of the Space Shuttle Challenger through rarely seen images, videos and news reports.

Challenger Disaster: Lost Tapes

On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after its liftoff from Cape Canaveral. Among the seven crew members killed was Christa McAuliffe , the first civilian, a teacher, to be launched into space. This powerful special marking the 30th anniversary of the tragedy retraces the events surrounding the mission without narration, instead relying solely on news reports, extensive recordings from NASA, archived interviews with McAuliffe and other rarely seen images, videos and audio recordings.
