The 11 Best Futurama Episodes To Watch Before Season 14
These picks cover the relationships and running storylines most likely to pop up throughout the show, with a few standalone classics included because leaving them out would be a crime against Robotology.
“Space Pilot 3000” (Season 1, Episode 1)
New to Futurama? Start with the first-ever episode. Fry is accidentally frozen on New Year’s Eve 1999 and wakes up a thousand years later in New New York. After meeting Leela and Bender, he dodges his assigned career and finds a new job with Planet Express. Keep an eye on the floor beneath Fry’s chair right before he falls into the cryogenic tube. One tiny shadow eventually becomes a much bigger piece of the show’s mythology.
“Hell Is Other Robots” (Season 1, Episode 9)
After becoming addicted to electricity, Bender joins the Robotology faith and turns painfully devout. Fry and Leela tempt him back into his old habits, which draws the attention of the Robot Devil.
“The Day the Earth Stood Stupid” (Season 3, Episode 7)
Giant floating brains invade Earth and make everyone stupid. Fry is somehow immune, and Nibbler reveals that he knows much more about the attack than his pet disguise suggests.
“The Luck of the Fryrish” (Season 3, Episode 10)
Fry heads into Old New York to recover a seven-leaf clover he hid before being frozen. The trail leads to a celebrated man who shares his name, convincing Fry that his brother stole the future meant for him. The episode helped build Futurama’s reputation as an adult animated comedy with real emotional range.
“Roswell That Ends Well” (Season 4, Episode 1)
A time-travel accident strands the Planet Express crew in 1947 Roswell. The military mistakes Bender’s body for a flying saucer, while Zoidberg ends up in custody as the suspected alien. Fry tries to stop the timeline getting any messier.
“Godfellas” (Season 4, Episode 8)
An explosion throws Bender into deep space, where a tiny civilization begins living on his metal body. After his attempts to guide them go badly, he drifts toward a mysterious cosmic being with its own ideas about playing god.
“Jurassic Bark” (Season 5, Episode 2)
Fry discovers the fossilized remains of Seymour, the dog he left behind in the 20th century. When Professor Farnsworth offers to revive him, Fry has to decide whether bringing Seymour back is the right thing to do.
“The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings” (Season 5, Episode 16)
The Robot Devil makes another theatrically villainous appearance in this episode. Fry wants to master the holophonor to impress Leela, but his hands refuse to cooperate. He makes a deal with the Robot Devil for a better pair and soon finds himself starring in an opera with dangerous strings attached.
“The Late Philip J. Fry” (Season 7, Episode 7)
A test run traps Fry and his companions inside a one-way time machine that only moves into the future. They overshoot their destination and keep moving ahead, hoping the universe will eventually offer a route home.
“Meanwhile” (Season 10, Episode 13)
Professor Farnsworth invents a button that can rewind time by ten seconds. Fry uses it while planning a proposal to Leela, but an accident leaves the pair alone in a frozen world. This episode served as the original show finale before Futurama’s 2023 revival.
“All the Way Down” (Season 11, Episode 10)
Professor Farnsworth builds a simulated universe to test whether reality itself might be artificial. The people inside create their own simulation, leaving the Planet Express crew peering down a very deep digital rabbit hole.
