A Rivalry Reaches Boiling Point: 1980 McEnroe v Connors
After his 1979 victory, McEnroe returned to the US Open. In the semifinal, he met fellow American Jimmy Connors in what turned out to be a high-intensity, emotionally charged match where neither player was willing to give an inch. A fifth-set tiebreak ultimately decided the match, and despite a 0–6 loss in the third set, McEnroe rebounded and secured his place in the final against Björn Borg.
