Anni, who has lived a sheltered life, falls in love with Veikko, wounded in the Continuation War. She leaves everything behind to become a settler in the deep wilderness of North Karelia, clearing a homestead, a so-called "cold farm." After a rosy beginning, fate shatters Anni's dreams and her love for Veikko is put to the test.
