In a world where people live with the constant threat of giant Kaiju attacks, Kafka Hibino once dreamed of joining the Defense Force. Over the years, he gave up on this dream and now works for a company cleaning up and disposing of the Kaiju's corpses.
When Kafka sees the success of his childhood friend, Defense Force Third Division Captain Mina Ashiro, and meets Reno Ichikawa, Kafka decides to pursue his goal anew.
Just as his dreams are finally coming together, an encounter with a strange Kaiju gives him the ability to transform into a massively powerful Kaiju himself. Kafka, now known as Kaiju No. 8, finds himself fleeing from the entire nation of Japan. While he still dreams of joining the Defense Force, when Kaiju disasters strike, he is ready to fight.
