When Teofilo Stevenson became a national hero in Cuba, American fight promoters offered him millions to challenge world heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali. To fight Ali, Stevenson would have needed to leave Cuba, but Stevenson refused the offer. Many boxing fans call the Ali-Stevenson fight the ‘greatest fight that never was.’ This is the story of how Teofilo Stevenson’s life and the life of his Cuban people were dramatically altered by the embargo.
