Isaura was born in 1835, the daughter of the slave Juliana and Miguel. After giving birth, Juliana is murdered by the Commander, and Isaura is raised by Gertrudes, who educates her as if she were her own daughter. Despite her good education and fair skin, she continues to be treated as a slave. At age 19, she faces the obsession of Leôncio, the Commander's son, while her freedom is never granted.
