Jussi Ketola is taken from his home at night and driven to the eastern border to be shot. He escapes across the border into the Soviet Union, where the NKVD gives him a new identity, a kolkhoz job, and a new wife. With American volunteers, he builds a workers' paradise in Karelia. When Stalin's purges begin, paradise turns to hell. Ketola would rather die, but death is not granted him.

Jussi Ketola is taken from his home at night and transported in black cars to the eastern border. At the border, they intend to shoot Ketola, but he manages to slip away from his killers and runs across the border into the Soviet Union. On the other side, the Soviet state police give him a new identity, a job at a kolkhoz, and arranges a new wife. Together with American volunteers who came to Karelia, Ketola builds a workers' paradise. But with Stalin's purges, paradise turns into hell, where Ketola would rather take a bullet to the head than live, but death is not granted to him. Ketola sees and experiences things he wouldn't believe were true if he hadn't experienced it himself.
