It is the late 19th century and the rise of the department stores crush small commerce. Mouret, a gifted former salesman, runs “Au Bonheur des Dames” and ruins Baudi, owner of “Le Petit Elbeuf.” He even wins the affections of Denise, Baudi’s niece, despite the jealousy and schemes of the treacherous Madame Desforges.

He even robs him of the affection of his niece Denise, despite the jealousy and intrigues of the treacherous Madame Desforges.
